How IB predicted grades work
Who sets predicted grades and when, what the IB does with them, how universities in six countries use them for 2027 entry, how often they turn out right, what to do when actual results differ, and how the calendar changes for November candidates. Every fact comes from the IB's, UCAS's and the universities' own pages.

Five things to know
A teacher's judgement of the final grade
Each subject teacher predicts the grade the student is expected to achieve, from all the evidence of their work and IB standards. There are eight: six subjects, TOK and the EE. The IB asks for neither over- nor under-prediction.
Most universities lean on them
UK, Hong Kong, Canadian and some Australian universities make offers on predicted grades, and NUS and SMU take applications on them. NTU waits for actual results; US universities ask for them with the application.
They do not set the IB grade
In a normal session the IB grades the exams and uses predictions to find students whose grades look too low, who are re-marked before results. Grades came from predictions only when exams could not run, as in May 2020.
They are often off
The IB's only published figure: 55% of students achieve at least a grade different from their prediction. UCAS data for A levels show most misses fall below the prediction; there is no such data for the IB.
Results differ? There are routes
Contact the university quickly, ask the school about a re-mark (grades can go down as well as up), or retake in a later session, where the highest grade counts.
November candidates run on another calendar
Results come on 16 December, so NUS, NTU, UCAS's 13 January date and US and Canadian regular deadlines can see actual results, while Oxford, Cambridge, US early rounds and Hong Kong first rounds still use predictions. See the November section.
Who sets predicted grades, and where they go
A predicted grade is the subject teacher's prediction of the grade the student is expected to achieve. The school sets it and the school sends it, and it is used twice: by universities during applications, and by the IB before results.
- DP1 and DP2
The teacher gathers evidence
The IB asks teachers to base predictions on all the evidence of the student's work and their knowledge of IB standards. Its grade descriptors are partly meant to guide these predictions.
- October to March
The school sends them to universities
Through the UCAS reference (15 October for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine; 13 January for most courses), HKU's portal (1 December), NUS (16 December to 17 February), UBC (15 March) and US school reports.
- Before the exams
The school sends them to the IB
Predictions go to the IB for every subject, TOK and the EE. The deadline is in the IB's procedures for schools, not on its public pages; your coordinator knows it.
- Before results
The IB checks marks against them
Students whose grades look too low next to their predictions are re-marked. May results then reach schools on 5 July and students on 6 July.
What the rules say
- Eight predictions
- Six subjects plus TOK and the EE, which are graded A to E and together give up to 3 core points. Universities treat these differently: LSE counts bonus points in the total, Toronto leaves them out.
- Accurate, not hopeful
- The IB asks that each prediction be made as accurately as possible, without under- or over-predicting.
- The IB watches schools
- The IB works with schools that consistently under- or over-predict, and gives each school an 'Actual vs Predicted Grades' report in its IB Insights tool.
- From the school, not the student
- SMU does not accept self-declared scores, NUS wants them attested by the school, and UNSW wants a signed letter on school letterhead. In UCAS's school process, students do not see their predicted grades.
- Hard to change once sent
- UCAS cannot change predicted grades after the application is sent, and UCL considers changes only for a genuine administrative error.
- Not every school shares them
- Some schools do not release predictions to students; UBC then asks the counsellor or IB coordinator to send them.
What the IB does with predicted grades
In a normal session, predicted grades do not count towards a student's IB grade. They matter in two ways: as a check before results, and as a fallback when exams cannot run.
| Situation | What the IB does |
|---|---|
| Every session: setting grade boundaries | Boundaries come from examiners' judgement, statistics, grade descriptors and teachers' feedback forms (G2). Predicted grades are not among them. |
| Every session: before results | Students whose grades look 'at risk of being too low' next to their predictions are re-marked before results are issued. |
| May 2020: no exams anywhere | Grades relied on teacher predictions for each student and subject, with a factor for each subject at each school based on its past prediction data. |
| Exams could not run at some schools: May 2021, May 2025, May 2026 (Middle East) | A non-exam route used coursework and teacher predicted grades; in May 2026 the IB also reviewed supporting evidence and called the measure a last resort. |
| One student misses an exam (adverse circumstances) | The IB may estimate a 'missing mark' from the student's completed components and other students' results. Its policy says predicted grades are not a route it can offer. |
The 'at risk' check is described in the IB's assessment guide for teachers and coordinators, which is undated; the IB does not publish its criteria.

How universities in six countries use them
From each university's own admissions pages, for 2027 entry. Where a page still shows last year's cycle, we say so. The UK is covered in detail in the next section. The table is for May candidates; November candidates have their own section below.
| University | Predicted grades | How they are used | After results |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | |||
| UK universities (UCAS) | Offer on predictions | The teacher who writes the UCAS reference adds predicted grades, and most offers are conditional on them. | The place is confirmed if the conditions are met; narrow misses are judged university by university (see the UK table below). |
| Singapore | |||
| NUS | Apply on predictions | May 2027 candidates apply with predicted IB results attested by the school (16 December 2026 to 17 February 2027). | Outcomes come by the third week of July 2027. Enter your IB personal code by 16 June and authorise the IB to send your results so NUS has them by 6 July 2027. |
| NTU | Actual results only | No provisional or conditional offer before actual IB results. Its IB pages do not mention predicted grades. | Give NTU direct access to your results and send them within three days of the July release; the outcome follows two to three weeks later. |
| SMU | Offer on predictions | Predicted scores must be submitted by the teacher; self-declared scores are not accepted. Last year's deadline was 31 March; 2027 dates are not out yet. | Official IB results are needed after you accept the offer and enrol. SMU does not say what happens if they differ. |
| Hong Kong | |||
| HKU | Offer on predictions | Counsellors enter predicted grades in HKU's system, by 1 December 2026 for the first round. Applicants with predicted results usually get a conditional offer. | The offer is confirmed once final results meet its conditions; HKU may withdraw it if the required final results are not sent. |
| HKUST | Offer on predictions | HKUST emails the IB coordinator an online predicted-grade form and suggests a reply within two weeks. Results come from December, on a rolling basis. | Conditional offer holders send results by the date in the offer letter; IB results go to HKUST from the IB directly (2026 guidance). |
| CUHK | Offer on predictions | Applicants by 12 November 2026 are considered for advance offers, firm or conditional depending on merit. The referee can upload predicted grades. | New exam results must be sent once available; no date is given. |
| Australia | |||
| University of Melbourne | Offer on predictions | Accepts predicted IB results 'provided specific conditions are met'; the page does not list them. | A conditional offer becomes final once official results meet the required entry score. |
| UNSW | Offer on predictions | Full offers on predicted grades at least 2 points above the standard requirement, for September (Term 3) entry, with a school letter on letterhead giving the total and each subject. Not for Law & Justice or Medicine & Health. | Final results are due by the start of term; if they miss the requirement, the student may need to change program or take a pathway. |
| University of Sydney | Not stated | Admission is based on the total of a completed IB Diploma; the pages we read do not mention predicted results. | Offers are unconditional or conditional; conditions can include completing current studies. |
| Monash University | Not stated | Requires satisfactory completion of the IB; the pages we read do not mention predicted results. | A conditional offer becomes a full offer once you send what is missing, usually final transcripts. |
| Canada | |||
| University of Toronto | Offer on predictions | Considers predicted or final IB results, excluding bonus points. | Offers are conditional on satisfactory final results, which the IB sends electronically. |
| UBC | Offer on predictions | International IB students send anticipated IB scores by 15 March; where a school does not release them to students, the counsellor or IB coordinator sends them. | All offers are conditional. A final total 4 or more points lower, or a drop of 3 or more in any course, triggers a review of the offer. |
| University of Waterloo | Offer on predictions | Conditional offers from December to May, using Grade 11 grades and mid-term or predicted grades. | Not meeting the offer conditions can lead to the offer being rescinded. |
| McGill University | Offer on predictions | Decides on the school transcript, including mid-year results of the final year, and predicted IB results. | Admitted students must keep up their performance; an offer may be withdrawn if grades fall significantly. |
| United States | |||
| MIT | Sent with application | Asks for predicted grades to be sent if available, as many grades come after decisions. | Only admitted students send final grades, in the summer. |
| Harvard | Sent with application | Expects IB schools to send predicted grades. | IB students send final results as soon as they are released in mid-July. |
| Stanford | Sent with application | For the IB Diploma outside the US, results and predictions are required if available, sent by the school. | Official results must follow; an offer may be withdrawn after a significant drop in academic performance. |
'Not stated' means the pages we read do not mention predicted results, not that the university refuses them. US universities decide before IB results, so predicted grades are part of the application file rather than the basis of a conditional offer.
UCAS: conditional offers and near misses
Almost every UK offer to an IB student is conditional on predicted grades. What happens after a narrow miss differs a lot between universities.
How UCAS handles them
- Who enters them
- The teacher who writes the reference adds predicted grades for qualifications still in progress. In the school's adviser portal, students do not see their reference or predicted grades.
- UCAS's rules for teachers
- Predictions must be final when the application is sent and set independently of the student's choices. Aspirational predictions can motivate, but should be based on demonstrable evidence.
- Offer, then confirmation
- Universities make a provisional, conditional offer from the predictions and the rest of the application, then decide when the actual results arrive, based on whether the conditions are met.
- How IB results arrive
- IB results reach UCAS and universities automatically through IBIS, which the school must set up; students cannot do it themselves. For 2027 entry, IB results reach schools and UCAS on 5 July 2027.
- If you miss
- The university may still accept you, or make a changed course offer that you must answer within five days. Clearing opens on 2 July 2027; Adjustment ended with 2022 entry.
- November results
- For the November 2024 session, results reached UCAS-registered schools on 16 December, but universities got them from UCAS only on 3 January 2025.
Eight universities compared
| University | Predicted grades | Narrow miss | Re-marks and resits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cambridge | Used to judge each applicant's potential. Minimum IB offer: 41–42 points with 776 at HL; some Colleges ask for more. | In August, Colleges reconsider near misses for any places left. UCAS shows only grades, so send the College your marks. | Would be concerned if an applicant has to retake a lot of exams (A level guidance). |
| Oxford | Looks for predictions that meet the course requirement (IB 38–40 including core, with 6s and 7s at HL). Leaving predictions out significantly lowers the chance of a place. | Your college reviews the results carefully and makes the final decision. Oxford is not in Clearing. | Appeals must be made by the school; no IB-specific re-mark guidance. |
| Imperial | Usually a conditional offer; typical IB offers are 38–42 with 6–7 in relevant HL subjects. | The exact conditions must be met; narrow misses are reviewed carefully. Imperial is not in Clearing. | Re-marked results only from the school or exam board, not the applicant (by 31 August in 2026). Retakes may be considered, except for Medicine. |
| LSE | Checks that applicants meet, or are predicted to meet, the minimum; context can support a standard offer to someone predicted marginally below. IB bonus points count. | Marginal misses go back to the selector automatically in August, in competition with other marginal misses. | Tell LSE about a re-mark; the official result must reach it by 3 September 2027. |
| UCL | Very unlikely to make an offer to a student predicted below its requirements, and considers changes to predictions only for a genuine administrative error. | Only meeting the conditions in full guarantees a place. For IB near misses, UCL usually waits until A level results in August. | Revised grades come through UCAS by the date in the offer letter (3 September in 2026). Resits taken more than once may be a disadvantage. |
| King's College London | Treats predictions as the teacher's judgement of the student. IB offers set a total that counts TOK and EE points. | May still offer a place to applicants very close to the offer, depending on other applicants' results. | Tell Admissions about any re-mark; the place is held until 31 August where possible. Re-sits are accepted for most programmes. |
| Warwick | Applicants predicted below the requirement can still apply. Contextual offers can be up to 4 IB points lower. | For most courses, Warwick cannot accept applicants who do not meet the conditions in full. | Re-mark or resit results by 1 September 2027. IB results must be released to Warwick through the IB. Resitting may be a disadvantage. |
| Edinburgh | Applicants must have achieved, or be predicted to achieve, the requirements; highly selective programmes may consider only those above them. | Decides on conditional offers when IB results arrive through UCAS. | Appeal through the exam board; a successful appeal does not guarantee a place (deadline 31 August in 2026). Often unable to offer places after resits. |
None of these pages gives re-mark rules specific to the IB. Dates marked 2026 are last cycle's; check the 2027 offer letter.
How accurate are predicted grades?
Less is published than you might expect. The IB has published one figure, in 2020; UCAS's detailed statistics cover A levels only, not the IB.
of students achieve at least a grade different from their teacher's prediction in a normal session
IB, July 2020more predicted 7s in 2020, the year grades were based on predictions
IB, August 2020of applicants with three A levels got lower grades than predicted (2019 cycle)
UCASof 18-year-olds in England with three predicted A levels did better than predicted (2023 cycle)
UCASUCAS also reports that around half of UK 18-year-olds were predicted AAA or better in 2025; by comparison, 26% of accepted applicants achieved AAA or better 'last summer'.
What the figures do not say
The IB did not say whether its 55% counts students with any one subject off or each prediction separately, nor which way the predictions missed, and it publishes no breakdown by subject or year. Schools get an 'Actual vs Predicted Grades' report from the IB, so your school may know how close its own predictions usually are.
Our reading
The IB's figure has no direction, but the UK's A-level data show that misses are mostly below the prediction. Plan as if results may come in a little lower: keep an insurance choice you would still meet, and do not count on beating the prediction.

Results day and re-marks
If the result comes in below the prediction, there are three routes, each with its own deadline: the university's decision, a re-mark through the school, and a retake in a later session.
Results day for the May session
- Before 5 July
Send results free
Through the coordinator, ask the IB to send results to up to six universities free; UCAS counts as one. After that, it is US$19 per transcript and can take up to 14 working days.
- 5 July
Schools and universities
Schools and universities with electronic access get the results (8pm Singapore time in 2026). Schools may pass them on to students straight away.
- 6 July
Students
Results open on the IB candidate website (8pm Singapore time in 2026). Never give your personal code and PIN to a university.
- July to September
Decisions and re-marks
Universities confirm offers or consider near misses, and re-mark requests go through the school. UCAS's last date for meeting conditions was 2 September in 2026.
Some universities want results from the IB itself rather than from you: NUS (by 6 July 2027), NTU (direct access), Toronto and HKUST, and Warwick through the IB rather than UCAS. November-session dates are in their own section below.
Re-marks (enquiry upon results)
After results, the school can place an enquiry upon results on the student's behalf, in one of three categories.
| Category | What it is | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Category 1 | A re-mark of all the student's externally assessed components in one subject | A report on the re-mark can be requested too. No fee if the grade changes. |
| Category 2 | Copies of the student's marked exam material | Copies only: no mark changes. |
| Category 3 | Re-moderation of the school's internal assessment sample | School-level. There is no individual re-mark of IA or of multiple-choice papers. |
- Requests go through the school, with the student's written consent, because a re-mark can lower a grade as well as raise it.
- There is a deadline, set in the IB's procedures for schools rather than on its public pages; ask your coordinator on results day. An IB examiner calendar (2021) puts May-session enquiries in July to September.
- The IB will not advise which category to choose, and no second re-mark is possible after an enquiry.
- If a grade changes after a university has your results, the IB sends it an updated transcript free of charge.
University deadlines for re-marked results are in the UK table above, for example 3 September 2027 at LSE and 1 September 2027 at Warwick.
Retakes, the diploma and adverse circumstances
Retaking in a later session
- Any later session
- A subject can be retaken in any future session, and the highest grade counts towards the diploma. If the course has changed, the retake follows the new curriculum.
- Ask the school first
- A school does not have to accept retake candidates and sets its own fees. For internal assessment, the IB says to ask the coordinator.
- No three-session limit
- The IB removed its three-session rule in 2023, though one IB page updated in September 2026 still mentions it. Check with your coordinator.
- Retaking in November
- November dates, deadlines and how universities treat resits are in the November section below.
When the diploma is not awarded
The diploma needs all of these:
- At least 24 points in total
- A grade in every subject, TOK and the EE, and CAS completed
- At least a 2 in every subject, no more than two 2s, and no more than three grades of 3 or below
- At least 12 points across HL subjects and 9 across SL subjects
- No E in TOK or the EE
Otherwise the student receives DP Course Results instead of the diploma, and the difference can be a single point (23 instead of 24).
Adverse circumstances
- Tell the school at once
- Help applies only if the student told the school before or during the exams. The school must send the request within 10 days of the student's last exam.
- What is covered
- Events beyond the student's control during the exams or in the three months before them.
- What the IB can do
- Defer exams to a later session, extend deadlines, reschedule, change the venue or access arrangements, or estimate a missing mark.
- Not covered
- Inadequate preparation (including starting the programme late), student errors, school administrative errors and minor disturbances.
If you sit the IB in November
Singapore is one of the IB's biggest November-session countries: 2,441 students sat DP exams there in November 2025, third after Peru and Australia. November candidates finish their exams in mid-November and get results on 16 December, so they meet some deadlines with predicted grades and others with actual results. May students who retake in November follow the same calendar.
Applying from the November session: 2027 entry
| Date | What happens | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| 15 Oct 2026 | UCAS deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses | Before results |
| 23 Oct – 13 Nov | November 2026 IB exams (every maths paper is on the timetable) | IB |
| 1 Nov | US early deadlines: MIT Early Action, Harvard and Stanford Restrictive Early Action | Before results |
| 12–25 Nov | Hong Kong early rounds: CUHK advance offers (12 Nov), HKU main round and HKUST priority round (25 Nov) | Before results |
| 30 Nov – 1 Dec | Australian direct applications for February–March 2027 entry: Melbourne (30 Nov), Sydney (1 Dec) | Before results |
| By 1 Dec | Tell the coordinator which universities need your results (the IB's suggested date; free requests close on 16 Dec) | IB |
| 16 Dec | Results to schools; in Singapore this is 17 Dec (3am for schools and 9am for students in 2025) | IB |
| 16–18 Dec, from 2 Jan | Re-marks: Category 1 only from 16 to 18 December, all categories from 2 January | IB |
| 23 Dec – Feb | Australian offer rounds through the admissions centres UAC and VTAC | After results |
| 1–5 Jan 2027 | US regular deadlines: Harvard (1 Jan), MIT (4 Jan), Stanford (5 Jan) | After results |
| 7 Jan | CUHK regular round | After results |
| 13 Jan | UCAS equal consideration date for most courses | After results |
| 15 Jan | Canada: Toronto, UBC and McGill | After results |
| 16 Dec – 17 Feb | NUS applications on actual results; outcomes progressively by May 2027 | After results |
| By 19 Mar | NTU closing date for November-session candidates (applications open from 15 Oct 2026) | After results |
- Two ways to apply
- Deadlines before 16 December use your school's predicted grades, exactly as for May candidates: UCAS's advice to November-session students was to apply with teacher predictions in the reference (2020 Q&A), and HKUST asks the coordinator for a predicted grade report. Later deadlines can see your actual results.
- Send results early
- Tell the coordinator by 1 December which universities need your results. Through UCAS, universities saw November 2024 results only on 3 January 2025, unless the student had nominated them in IBIS.
- Singapore universities wait for results
- NUS assesses November candidates on actual results (outcomes progressively by May 2027), NTU makes no offer before results, and SMU accepts self-reported actual results (last year's page).
- Results in hand can mean an unconditional offer
- Cambridge makes unconditional offers only to applicants who have completed their qualifications with the required grades, and Edinburgh says applying during a year out with grades achieved may put you in a stronger position.
- US and Canada: already graduated
- Harvard and Stanford do not ask graduates for a midyear report (Harvard wants a final school report instead). UBC wants final transcripts from graduates by 15 March, and McGill takes final results instead of predicted ones.
- Australia starts sooner
- Semester 1 starts in February–March 2027. Melbourne's and Sydney's direct deadlines fall before results; Melbourne makes a conditional offer until final results arrive.
Retaking in November after a May session
- Maths is on the November timetable
- Every Mathematics AA and AI paper, SL and HL, is in the November 2026 schedule (23 October to 13 November; provisionally 22 October to 12 November in 2027). Some subjects, such as World religions and Classical Greek, are not in it at all.
- Any IB school can register you
- A retake can be sat at any IB World School offering the DP, but a student cannot be registered by two schools at once, and the registering school takes full responsibility for the candidate.
- Too late for this year's offers
- Results come on 16 December, while UK results deadlines for 2027 offers run from 18 July to 3 September, and KCL and LSE do not defer or carry over conditional offers. No university says so outright, but a November retake mainly serves a new application the following year.
- Universities see every sitting
- NUS and NTU ask you to re-authorise IB access after a retake so they can see all your results, and Cambridge asks applicants to declare every unit, including retakes.
- Resit policies differ
- UCL's Mathematics and Statistics departments do not typically accept resits, LSE's 2025/26 policy expects first-sitting results, and Edinburgh is often unable to offer places (none in Medicine or Veterinary Medicine). Imperial (except Medicine) and King's may still consider them.
- Reapplying
- HKU accepts one application per academic year, and SMU treats a reapplication as a fresh application.
UK, US and Canadian university pages say almost nothing about the November session itself, so most of this rests on their general rules and dates. Dates are for 2027 entry; check each page again before applying.

Five practical steps
Ask how your school predicts
Schools run their own process. Ask when predictions are made, what work counts, and whether they can change before applications go out. The IB asks teachers to use all the evidence, so steady results through DP1 matter more than one test.
Know when each university gets them
Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine close on 15 October, HKU's first round needs predictions by 1 December, and UBC by 15 March. Predictions sent through UCAS cannot be changed afterwards.
Leave room in your offers
Choose an insurance offer you would meet even with a slightly lower result. UNSW asks for 2 points above its requirement for a full offer on predictions, and UBC reviews an offer when the total falls by 4 points or more.
Prepare results day in June
Have your IB personal code and PIN ready, place the free results requests before 5 July, and know the re-mark deadline and consent form. NUS needs the personal code by 16 June 2027.
If maths is the risk, count the marks
Work out what the exam needs for each grade, given the IA mark. The grade calculator does this from past grade boundaries.

Predicted grades start in DP1
In the IB Pathway Diagnostic (90 minutes, S$500), we compare the student's school results and mocks with target offers and plan the maths preparation behind the prediction.
This is an independent summary by Math with Alex of pages published by the IB, UCAS and universities. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them. Predicted grades are set by each school under IB guidance: ask your school's IB coordinator about its process, and check each university's current rules before applying.
