Applying to Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW and Monash with the IB
For students who take the IB outside Australia and apply as international students: the IB score each course asks for, how the IB converts to an ATAR, how and when to apply, which universities take predicted grades, when a May or November student can start, and what it costs. Every fact comes from the universities', UAC's and VTAC's own pages.

Six things to know
The IB score is what counts
Each university lists an IB score per course for students who take the IB outside Australia. The scores are indicative or required, not guaranteed, and they differ: Commerce is 31 at Monash, 34 at Melbourne, 36 at UNSW and 38 at Sydney.
One conversion table
UAC and VTAC use the same table for an IB taken outside Australia: 45 = 99.95, 40 = 96.85, 35 = 90.75, 30 = 79.30. It changes every year, and for international applicants the universities' own IB lists are what decide.
Apply directly
A student taking the IB in Singapore applies to each university directly or through an agent; VTAC and, for Sydney, UAC are for the IB taken in Australia. For February–March 2027, Melbourne closed on 30 November and Sydney on 1 December 2026.
May students have three starts
Results come on 6 July. Melbourne and Monash take predicted grades for a July start in many courses, UNSW for a September start if the prediction is 2 points above the requirement, and all four take final results for February–March of the next year.
Melbourne works differently
Law, engineering, medicine, dentistry and architecture are graduate degrees at Melbourne: a three-year bachelor's comes first. Melbourne lists indicative IB scores for packages that reserve the later place (Law 43, Engineering 38).
Costs and scholarships
Tuition runs from about A$47,000 to A$69,000 a year in 2027, plus at least A$29,710 a year in living costs for the visa. Melbourne's new 20% scholarship is automatic; Sydney's 20% award is open to Korean citizens but not Singaporeans; UNSW's is open to neither.
How an IB total converts to an ATAR
Australian students get an ATAR, a rank from 0 to 99.95. For an IB taken outside Australia, UAC (New South Wales) and VTAC (Victoria) convert the whole-number total out of 45 with the same table, and say the result is used like an ATAR.
| IB total | ATAR equivalent | IB total | ATAR equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 45 | 99.95 | 34 | 89.00 |
| 44 | 99.75 | 33 | 86.65 |
| 43 | 99.35 | 32 | 84.20 |
| 42 | 98.65 | 31 | 81.70 |
| 41 | 97.80 | 30 | 79.30 |
| 40 | 96.85 | 29 | 77.10 |
| 39 | 95.80 | 28 | 74.65 |
| 38 | 94.65 | 27 | 72.25 |
| 37 | 93.60 | 26 | 69.55 |
| 36 | 92.25 | 25 | 66.95 |
| 35 | 90.75 | 24 | 64.60 |
- The table is set each year: in VTAC's 2025 table, 30 was 80.90 rather than 79.30. Use the current year's table.
- For international applicants the universities publish their own IB scores per course, and those are what count. Their 'international ATAR' columns do not follow this table exactly: Sydney pairs IB 38 with 96, while the table gives 94.65.
- Students who sit the IB in Australia get a decimal IB Admissions Score instead; that table does not apply to an IB taken in Singapore.

- Melbourne calls its figures indicative entry scores, Sydney indicative scores, UNSW the entry requirement for a completed Diploma, and Monash the required academic entry score. None is a guaranteed offer; places are limited and selection is by merit.
- UNSW's degree pages show higher 'IB Diploma' figures (Commerce 41) next to the domestic selection ranks; the figures here are from its international direct-entry table.

How each university handles an IB applicant from Singapore
Rules for 2027 entry, for a student who takes the IB outside Australia.
| Melbourne | Sydney | UNSW | Monash | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How to apply | Directly online or through an authorised agent; VTAC is only for the IB taken in Australia or New Zealand | Directly or through an agent; UAC is only for the IB taken in Australia | Directly (Applicant Portal) or through an agent; UNSW's 2027 table calls UAC optional for IB students | Directly or through an agent; VTAC is only for the IB taken in Australia or New Zealand |
| Application deadline | 30 Nov 2026 for Semester 1, 31 May 2027 for mid-year; later only if places remain | 1 Dec 2026 for Semester 1, 29 May 2027 for Semester 2; may close early when full | Term 1 2027 offer rounds closed 24 Sep 2026; Term 2 and 3 dates not yet published | No fixed closing date; some courses close months ahead |
| Teaching starts, 2027 | 1 Mar and 26 Jul | 22 Feb and 2 Aug | 15 Feb, 31 May and 13 Sep (two semesters from 2028) | 1 Mar and 26 Jul |
| Predicted IB grades | Accepted 'provided specific conditions are met'; at or above the guaranteed score can mean an unconditional offer, otherwise conditional | Sydney's pages ask for a completed IB; UAC's list says it considers predictions 2 points above the requirement for semester 2 | Full offer if the predicted total is 2 points above the requirement, for Term 3 (September) entry; not for Law or Medicine and Health | From Monash-approved schools for most courses; higher (unpublished) scores apply; not for Education or Medicine |
| Fee to apply, deposit | A$154; deposit A$17,000 | A$150; first semester's tuition on acceptance | Deposit stated in the offer; 56 days to accept | A$125; deposit usually 50% of a year's tuition |
UNSW's pages disagree on UAC: one web page says IB students need to apply through UAC, while its 2027 table and degree pages say they can apply directly. UNSW's predicted-grade letter must be dated after 1 January in the IB section of that table, and after 1 November of the previous year in its general rules. Check with UNSW before relying on either.

When can a May or November IB student start?
Australia's year starts in February–March, with a second start in July (and September at UNSW). How soon a student can start depends on the IB session and on whether the university takes predicted grades.
IB in May 2027 (results 6 July 2027)
Mid-year start on predicted grades
Melbourne (apply by 31 May) and Monash take predicted grades for courses with a July start; the offer stays conditional until results. Classes start 26 July. Sydney's Semester 2 (2 August) closes on 29 May, and its own pages ask for completed results.
UNSW Term 3
UNSW makes a full offer if the predicted total is 2 points above the requirement, on a signed school letter with each subject. Final results are due by the start of term (13 September). Not for Law or Medicine and Health.
Any of the four, with final results
Apply after results for the next year. The 2028 dates are not out yet; for 2027 Melbourne closed on 30 November and Sydney on 1 December. UNSW moves to two semesters in 2028.
IB in November 2026 (results 16 December 2026)
Semester 1, the same academic year
Melbourne (30 November, later only if places remain) and Sydney (1 December) take applications before results; Sydney runs an offer round for IB graduates after 16 December. UNSW's Term 1 rounds have closed, and Monash has no fixed date.
Mid-year entry is not open in every course (see the tables above), and a July start leaves about three weeks between results and classes for the offer, deposit and visa.

Which IB subjects and English each university asks for
- Melbourne
- Maths prerequisite: grade 4 in AA SL, AA HL or AI HL (AI SL counts only for Agriculture, at 5). Science adds Biology, Chemistry or Physics at 4; Biomedicine adds Chemistry. English: grade 4 in English A or B, SL or HL.
- Sydney
- No subject prerequisites for an IB taken outside Australia; assumed knowledge is stated in New South Wales HSC terms (Maths Extension 1 for Advanced Computing, Maths Advanced for Economics). Singapore is on Sydney's list of English-speaking countries, so an IB taught in English meets the English requirement; Nursing and Education ask more.
- UNSW
- No prerequisites, only assumed knowledge (Maths Extension 1 for Engineering, Computer Science and Actuarial Studies; Maths Advanced for Commerce), with no official IB equivalent. English is met if English is the main language of instruction; otherwise English A HL 4 or SL 5, or English B HL 7, higher for Business, Law and Education.
- Monash
- English SL 4 or HL 3 for every course (Law SL 5 or HL 4). Commerce, Economics, Computer Science and Engineering need maths AA SL 4 or AA/AI HL 3, so AI SL is not enough; Business accepts AI SL 4. Engineering adds Chemistry or Physics; Biomedical Science adds Chemistry.
Melbourne's graduate degrees
Melbourne teaches a small set of broad bachelor's degrees and most professions as graduate degrees, so a student who wants law, engineering or medicine there starts with a bachelor's in another field.
- Law
- The Juris Doctor (3 years) follows a bachelor's in any field other than law; no mid-year entry.
- Engineering
- A bachelor's (Biomedicine, Commerce, Design or Science), then the 2-year Master of Engineering.
- Architecture
- The 3-year Bachelor of Design, then the 2-year Master of Architecture.
- Medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy
- Graduate degrees after Biomedicine or Science. Melbourne's guaranteed routes into them (Chancellor's Scholars, Health packages) are only for students who finish Year 12 or the IB in Australia.
- Graduate Degree Packages
- One offer for the bachelor's plus a place in the graduate degree. Melbourne lists indicative IB scores for offshore applicants: Law 43, Engineering 38 (34 for one package), Architecture and design 34; some of its pages limit packages to the IB taken in Australia, so ask Melbourne.

Checked on university, UAC, VTAC and government pages in October 2026.
Australia rewards the IB total
In the IB Pathway Diagnostic (90 minutes, S$500), we compare the student's school results and expected total with each university's course scores and check that their maths and science choices keep the prerequisites open.
This is an independent summary by Math with Alex of pages published by the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, UNSW Sydney, Monash University, UAC, VTAC and the Australian Government. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them. Scores, dates and fees change every year: check each university's current pages before applying.
