IB Maths AA grade calculator

Enter your marks for each paper and the IA. The calculator weights them the way the IB does and shows the grade that total earned in each past session, using the boundaries in the IB subject reports.

Tiles show the grade the same total earned in each session: orange is a 7, navy a 6, light a 5 or below.

Working back from a target

What do you need on the exams?

Choose a target grade and enter the IA mark. The calculator shows the exam average you need, from the session with the lowest boundary to the one with the highest.

Level
/ 20

Enter the IA mark (0–20).

Exam average = weighted average of the papers (HL: P1 30, P2 30, P3 20 / SL: P1 40, P2 40). Calculation: (boundary − IA mark) ÷ 0.8, rounded up.

How it works

How the total out of 100 is calculated

Each component is scaled to its weighting and the results are added. The IB then compares the total with the grade boundaries set for that session.

AA HL

ComponentMarksWeightingOne mark adds
Paper 1 (no calculator)11030%0.27
Paper 2 (calculator)11030%0.27
Paper 3 (problem solving)5520%0.36
IA (exploration)2020%1

AA SL

ComponentMarksWeightingOne mark adds
Paper 1 (no calculator)8040%0.5
Paper 2 (calculator)8040%0.5
IA (exploration)2020%1

Example (HL)

Paper 1 80/110, Paper 2 75/110, Paper 3 30/55 and IA 17/20 give 21.8 + 20.5 + 10.9 + 17.0 = 70.2, a total of 70. That was a 7 in May 2023 but a 6 in the other five sessions.

The IB rounds each component, so a real result can differ by about 1 mark. Boundaries are set after each exam, so any calculator gives an estimate, not a promise.

Where a session had more than one time zone, the value is the average across time zones, rounded. A single time zone can be a mark or two higher or lower. There is no 2022 HL subject report.

Takeaways

Four things the boundaries show

  1. The same total can be a 6 or a 7

From 2022 to 2025 the 7 boundary ranged from 70 to 79 at HL and from 68 to 80 at SL. Plan with the highest boundary, not the lowest.

  2. November boundaries were higher every year

In every year of this data, the November 7 boundary was higher than the May one, at both HL and SL. Students sitting in November should aim a little higher.

  3. An IA mark counts more than an exam mark

At HL one IA mark adds 1 to the total, a Paper 1 or 2 mark adds 0.27 and a Paper 3 mark 0.36. At SL an exam mark adds 0.5. The IA is also the part you can finish before the exams.

  4. The papers change for May 2029

The new course has fewer marks per paper (SL Papers 1 and 2: 75; HL Papers 1 and 2: 100, Paper 3: 50) and will have its own boundaries. This calculator is for the current course, with exams up to November 2028.
