SAT and ACT policies at 40 US universities
Which US universities require SAT or ACT for fall 2027 entry (applying now) and fall 2028 entry (students in DP1 now), whether they superscore, whether IB or AP can count instead, the early deadlines and the English-test rules. Every line comes from the university's own admissions pages.

Four things to know
SAT or ACT is required at 11 of the 40
Harvard, Yale, Penn, Brown, Cornell, MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and Georgia Tech require SAT or ACT for fall 2027 entry. Yale has ended its option to use AP or IB instead. Dartmouth and Carnegie Mellon also require testing but accept other exams such as the IB.
Five more switch for fall 2028
Princeton, Columbia, Notre Dame, Claremont McKenna and Harvey Mudd are optional now but require SAT or ACT for fall 2028 entry, the cycle for students in DP1 now. Vanderbilt stays optional for 2028 and requires scores from fall 2029.
Optional universities have their own small rules
At Rice, Vanderbilt and Harvey Mudd the testing choice you make on the application is locked or can only go one way; UVA and Williams let you change it until a deadline. USC accepts only official scores, while many others accept self-reported scores until you enrol.
For IB students, IB results can matter as much as SAT
NYU and most Carnegie Mellon colleges accept IB results in place of SAT/ACT; Dartmouth and, for fall 2027, Notre Dame accept them from students at schools outside the US; WashU lets international applicants send them while staying test-optional. Caltech asks IB students to take HL Maths.

Deadlines are for the 2026–27 cycle (fall 2027 entry): November dates are in 2026, January and February dates in 2027; some official pages give no year. Fall 2028 'No change announced' means the current policy is stated with no end date; 'Not announced' means the university has published only its fall 2027 policy. 'No' under IB or AP means the official pages do not offer other exams in place of SAT/ACT; IB and AP results can still be reported at most universities.

What IB students should know
Predicted grades go with the application
Stanford asks IB Diploma students outside the US for predicted IB marks from the school. Brown and Bowdoin ask for predicted or actual results, and Georgia Tech strongly recommends sending predicted IB scores.
Where IB results can replace SAT/ACT
NYU (any applicant), most Carnegie Mellon colleges, Dartmouth (schools outside the US) and Notre Dame (outside the US, stated for fall 2027). WashU lets international applicants send IB results while staying test-optional.
Final results still count
Swarthmore requires the official IB score from IB Diploma graduates, and Dartmouth asks for final IB results through the IB before you enrol.
Maths level
Caltech requires IB students to take Higher Level Maths. For which IB maths each degree asks for, see our requirements guide.
English tests for students in Singapore
Most universities ask non-native English speakers for TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results and waive this after a set number of years in an English-medium school. Check your own case against the table; these rules stand out:
- Not required
- Harvard and Stanford do not require an English test from first-year applicants.
- No waiver for non-native speakers
- USC asks every international applicant whose native language is not English for an approved English exam, with no exceptions; SAT EBRW 650+ or ACT English 27+ also count. Carnegie Mellon and Northwestern also ask non-native speakers for a test.
- Michigan
- The exemption needs qualifying SAT or ACT scores and at least four recent years of study in listed countries or at American or British schools abroad. Singapore is not on the country list.
- Swarthmore
- Students at schools outside the US send one of three: a Swarthmore video response, an English test or an InitialView or Vericant interview.
- University of California
- English proficiency is required with less than three years of English-medium instruction; IB or AP English scores are among the ways to meet it.
- New TOEFL scale
- TOEFL iBT scores moved to a 1–6 scale in January 2026, so many universities now list minimums on both scales.

What the terms mean
- Required
- You must send an SAT or ACT score.
- Test-flexible
- A test is required, but other exams such as IB, AP or A-levels can count instead of SAT or ACT.
- Test-optional
- You choose whether to send SAT or ACT scores; applications without scores are reviewed in full.
- Test-blind
- Scores are not used in admission, even if you send them.
- Superscore
- Your best section scores from different test dates are combined into one score.
- Early Decision (ED)
- Binding: if admitted, you must enrol and withdraw your other applications. You can apply ED to only one university.
- ED II
- A second binding round with a later deadline, usually in January.
- Early Action (EA)
- An early, non-binding round; you can usually apply EA to several universities.
- REA / SCEA
- Restrictive or Single-Choice Early Action: non-binding, but you may not apply early to most other private universities.
- Regular Decision
- The main round, with deadlines mostly in January.
